Nike (pronounced: /najk/ in French; original pronunciation: /ˈnaɪ.kiː/1 in English, like the goddess of victory) is an American company created in 1971 by Philip Knight and Bill Bowerman. Based in Beaverton, Oregon, it specializes in the manufacturing of sporting goods (shoes, clothing and sports equipment).

The name Nike is inspired by the Greek goddess of victory Nike (Nικη), a winged goddess capable of moving at great speed, whose best-known representation, a statue exhibited in the Louvre, is the Victory of Samothrace.

The brand has ensured its notoriety through a simple and quickly recognizable logo: the Swoosh, a comma placed upside down and horizontally; it was created by Carolyn Davidson in 19713 as a stylized representation of the goddess's wing.
